DISCLAIMER

This calculator provides an estimate of a patient's likelihood of staying at home versus being admitted to long term care after surgery.

It was developed using data from 97,353 adults aged 70 or older who underwent and survived cancer surgery in Ontario, Canada from 2007 to 2019. Results are based on key factors shown to be strongly associated with admission to long-term care after surgery in this specific population and may not fully represent risks for people in other age groups, regions, healthcare systems, or care settings.

‍These calculator estimates are not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. They are intended to support counselling, shared decision-making, and planning before surgery.

The results should not be used to predict outcomes for any individual or to guide decisions about life, finances, or healthcare without consulting a qualified medical professional.

We encourage patients, care partners, and healthcare providers to use these estimates only as one part of a broader discussion and not as the sole basis for decision-making. Professional medical advice should never be disregarded, delayed, or replaced by information from this calculator.

Disclaimer
Information provided on this web site is neither intended nor implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice. You should not use information from this website to diagnose or treat a health problem or disease without consulting a qualified healthcare provider. We advise you to always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health provider prior to starting any new treatment or with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition.

While there is evidence that altering lifestyle factors can change an individual’s health risk, some changes may work quickly to lower risk, while others may take longer to achieve some benefit. The science is not definitive on the timing of the maximum benefit.

‍Accuracy of Risk Assessment
The risk scoring systems were developed in men and women who were free of the respective health outcome at baseline. Most algorithms are calibrated to either the Ontario or Canadian population. The calculations may not reflect risk for people from different populations. Please see our FAQs for more information.
